Back Pain can be caused by numerous conditions.
Here are some of the most common:

Herniated Discs

Small spongy discs cushion the bones that form the spine. When these discs are damaged, it is referred to as a herniated, slipped or ruptured disc.

Herniated discs can happen anywhere in the spine. When one of these discs ruptures in the lower spine, back pain, tingling, numbness or weakness may be felt in the buttock or down the leg. While a rupture in a disc closer to the neck can cause back pain between the shoulders and tingling the arms or headaches.

Radiculopathy is damage to the nerve root that can affect areas away from the spine. For example damage to a nerve root near the neck may cause back pain, tingling or numbness in the shoulder, forearm or fingers. While damage to a nerve root in the lower back can cause pain, tingling or numbness in the leg or foot.

Spondylosis is a condition in which symptoms are usually in the back or neck and may be referred to adjacent areas like base of the head headaches, shoulders, upper back or shoulder blades, hips, groin or thighs. In addition it can cause lack of coordination, difficulty walking and sometimes loss of bladder or bowel control. Spondylosis is cause by degeneration of one of the vertebral joints and is usually caused by a trauma or osteoporosis.

Vertebral Fractures and Osteoporosis

Vertebral Fractures caused by Osteoporosis are very common. Osteoporosis weakens bones until they fracture. When this happens in the spine it can cause severe back pain and lead to loss of height.

In the past treatment was rather limited, but today new procedures are available to stabilize bone, dramatically reduce back pain while restoring height.
